About this Microcredential

The New South Wales Geography syllabus provides students with opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of key geographical concepts, including landscapes and landforms, the liveability of places, interconnections and trade, rural and urban places, ecosystems and biodiversity, environmental change and management, human wellbeing and sustainability.
The Help! I’m Teaching Geography for the First Time microcredential provides a comprehensive overview of the Geography syllabus for secondary teachers new to teaching the subject. You’ll learn how to select key geographical concepts and tools from the syllabus and apply them in the classroom; how to develop a geo-inquiry and geo-literacy stance to maintain a geographically distinctive way of teaching; how to emphasise the real-world relevance of geography throughthe use of case studies and geo careers; and how to make geography visible through the design of, and feedback on, assessment tasks.

Who you will learn from

Susan Caldis
Dr Susan Caldis

Dr Susan Caldis is a Senior Lecturer in the Macquarie School of Education. For more than a decade, she has been instrumental in the design and delivery of curriculum-aligned professional learning through leadership roles in state and national professional associations for geography teachers. Her research seeks to understand how the experience of transitioning into the teaching profession influences practice in the secondary geography classroom, as well as how pre-service teachers manage and respond to teaching geography as an out-of-field subject.

Kathy Jones
Ms Kathy Jones

Kathy Jones is the founder and director of Fieldwork Connections, an educational consultancy that facilitates school-based fieldwork investigations for teachers of geography. She obtained environmental science and secondary education degrees from Macquarie, before working as an environmental consultant in contaminated land. With a passion for education, she now balances her role at Fieldwork Connections with classroom teaching at secondary schools and lecturing at Macquarie.
