What is the difference between a Macquarie degree program and a microcredential?

A Macquarie degree program awards a qualification at the undergraduate (bachelor’s degree) or postgraduate (higher degree) level or as an honorary recognition (honorary degree) of achievement. Successful completion of a Macquarie degree program certifies the achievement by a testamur and official academic transcript.

A Macquarie microcredential does not award a qualification upon successful completion; however, it can be aligned with a degree program for further learning opportunities. Macquarie microcredentials are smaller learning experiences compared to degree programs which can be completed in a shorter time through a more specialised approach, allowing you to upskill or reskill relatively quickly. Successful completion of a Macquarie microcredential rewards the achievement by a digital badge or certificate.

How are Macquarie microcredentials delivered?

Macquarie microcredentials are delivered in three modes:

Online: you will undertake your microcredential study 100% online without needing to attend a learning space physically. All your learning and assessment activities are entirely online, which means you will never need to travel to engage with your learning journey as it will be in an online environment on your preferred device.
You can take part in Macquarie online microcredentials in the following forms:

  • Self-paced: learn on your own schedule, at any time, and on any device within a specific timeframe (asynchronous learning)
  • Virtual attendance: learning will be from a distance where you will virtually engage with your facilitators and peers in a planned and structured live session (synchronous learning).

Each Macquarie online microcredential learning format is outlined on its corresponding product page.

Face-to-face: your microcredential learning experience will be provided in person, involving your physical attendance at a scheduled session in a live setting among other participants, instructors, and facilitators.

Mixed: your microcredential learning journey will combine the Online and Face-to-face approaches defined above.

How much time do I need to commit to my credentialled learning?

Each Macquarie microcredential specifies the indicative total amount of time and dedication required for participants to allocate for their learning. These details are presented on the microcredential description page, under the Overview tab, within the red box located at the top, by the ‘Duration’ and ‘Commitment’ fields.

‘Duration’ represents the total time required for a participant to complete the microcredential, from start to end, including all teaching, learning, and assessment activities.

‘Commitment’ refers to the indicative hours on average a participant should allot per week within the total ‘Duration’. It is important to note that the ‘Commitment’ hours are indicative and provided for guidance only, as these will vary for each participant depending on their personal factors.

What sorts of assessments do I need to complete?Every Macquarie microcredential has its unique learning and assessment design. Some may have one type of assessment, such as an online test, whereas some may include multiple assessment types, such as a problem-based activity and a written report. Each microcredential page on this website clearly specifies the learning and assessment activities involved in your learning.
How can I enrol in a Macquarie microcredential? To enrol in a Macquarie microcredential, please visit its accompanying page on this website and click on the ‘Enrol Now’ button. If there is not an ‘Enrol Now’ button appearing, please navigate to the ‘Ready to Enrol’ tab to ‘Join the Waitlist’ to register your interest.
Am I eligible to enrol in a Macquarie microcredential?Eligibility requirements vary across Macquarie microcredentials. If there are any mandatory requirements stipulated to register in a Macquarie microcredential, these are explicitly outlined in its description page on this website, in the ‘Prerequisites’ section located under the ‘Overview’ tab. Please check the description page of your microcredential of interest to determine your eligibility.
Am I eligible for FEE-HELP to study a microcredential?FEE-HELP is a loan scheme the Australian Government offers for eligible higher education students to pay their tuition fees at Macquarie University and other higher education providers. However, microcredential fees are not covered by the FEE-HELP loan scheme as it is only available to higher-education students undertaking a degree program. Therefore, Macquarie microcredential fees are required to be paid upfront – without in instalments – and cannot be deferred through FEE-HELP.
Does my microcredential count toward a Macquarie degree program?

Macquarie microcredentials may grant recognition for further study at the University, particularly in a degree program at a postgraduate level.

However, unless otherwise stated by the University, completing a microcredential will not provide a direct admission pathway into a Macquarie degree program. The University has sole discretion to decide whether completion of a microcredential will be recognised for credit towards a Macquarie degree program or for facilitating an entry.

In exercising its discretion, the University will refer to its Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (available here, as amended or replaced from time to time), the requirements of the degree program, and other relevant matters, such as when the microcredential was completed.

Please get in touch with us to check whether your microcredential of interest may count toward a Macquarie degree program.

As a Macquarie microcredential participant, am I considered a Macquarie University student?Macquarie microcredentials are a non-accredited form of study, unlike the degree programs (see above for more information). Therefore, you will not be a student of Macquarie University as a result of enrolling, participating in, or completing a microcredential. You can read more information about the terms of service for microcredentials on our Terms and Conditions page.
What is a digital credential?Digital credentials certify your achievement of a microcredential, verifying your demonstration of the learning outcomes outlined in your selected microcredential description page under the ‘What you’ll study’ tab. A digital credential is issued to participants upon completing a microcredential successfully. It is presented in the form of a digital badge or a certificate containing detailed information about its intrinsic elements such as learning outcomes, activities undertaken, skills demonstrated, etc. Please visit our digital credential directory to see examples of some of the digital credentials we have issued to participants who have completed their microcredential journey with us.
