Overview

About this Microcredential

The New South Wales Society and Culture syllabus provides senior students with opportunities to develop social and cultural literacy, and to understand how interactions shape human behaviour. Drawing on cross-disciplinary concepts, and social and cultural research methods, students undertake research in an area of interest to them and present their findings for external assessment in a Personal Interest Project (PIP).
The Help! I’m Teaching Society and Culture for the First Time microcredential provides a comprehensive overview of the Society and Culture syllabus for secondary teachers new to teaching the subject. You’ll develop your understanding of the fundamental and additional course concepts, including persons, society, culture, environment, time, power, authority, gender, identity, technologies and globalisation. You’ll then unpack the components of the PIP, before exploring the two broad approaches to social research – quantitative and qualitative – that students must utilise when conducting their PIP.

Key features

  • Develop a broad understanding of the Society and Culture syllabus - Explore key components, themes and objectives and then identify how to best apply them in practical contexts.
  • Deliver exercises that foster a deep understanding of the material - Reflect on and implement a range of engaging and relevant activities within the classroom that enhance student participation.
